Each piece of wood talks...

Sometimes I have a unique piece of wood and I'm not quite sure what to do with it... so I leave it on my desk staring at me until it tells me what to make. Each knot and curve of a piece of wood creates a new idea and inspiration for an item. Driftwood is my favorite medium because of the unique textures and shapes that only decades of sun, sand and sea can form. It allows me to create one-of-a-kind items for Fir and Forest.

The seeds of Fir and Forest...

Recently I have moved to Arkansas but prior spent the past nine years I've worked in the corporate side of the entertainment business in New York City. My love of music extended to many other art forms and the need for a creative outlet led me to do design work for indie bands i.e. rock posters and album art. When preparing for my mountain wedding, I began crafting wood-burned table numbers, place cards and other decor. Working hands-on and using natural materials made me feel a little closer to home. The items inspired me, and put me back in touch with my beautiful home state of Utah. Eventually, I had far more ideas than I could make for my wedding and I didn't want to stop. It only seemed natural to open my own shop!

The forest grows...

From the initial sketch, to communicating with customers, to packing the boxes, every detail of the process is important to me. It has been so enjoyable to expand the scope of Fir and Forest from wedding decor to encompass holiday items and home decor and I look forward to developing new ideas as each piece of wood talks.
